Flags During the 9th Century
While the use of heraldry (and thus heraldic flags) did not come into
common use until the late 12th century, the use of flags to mark persons
of import seems to have started quite early.
The Oriflamme is one of the earliest mentions of a
medieval flag.
Herbert Norris talks about a flag
in a 9th-century mosaic.
