Description: Details of "The seals of the landgrave Conrad II of Thuringia around 1234; on the left-hand seal enthroned as a ruler of his lands, on the other on horseback as leader of his army, in both cases bearing his armorial shield. As ruler, he shows the banner bestowed on him as feudal lord; as leader of his troops he only required at the time a flag without an image on it -- a gonfanon."

Comments: These seals illustrate the different uses of flags in the middle ages. A banner for the feudal lord/person, and an un-charged gonfanon for the position of military leader.
